Marketplace coverage means Form 8962 reconciliation. Find 1095-A, check it, then file—do not skip APTC cleanup.
If you (or someone in your tax family) had a Health Insurance Marketplace plan, you get Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement. It comes from the Marketplace, not the IRS. You use it to figure or reconcile the premium tax credit on Form 8962.
Why freelancers care
Self-employed people often buy coverage on HealthCare.gov or a state exchange. Advance premium tax credit (APTC) lowers monthly premiums during the year based on an income estimate. At filing time you must reconcile that estimate against actual income. Skipping Form 8962 when APTC was paid delays refunds and can create repayment.

Steps that prevent April panic
- Get the form. Marketplace accounts often have 1095-A online; mail copies follow. For coverage year N, expect the form by late January / mid-February of year N+1. Missing it? Contact the Marketplace before you file.
- Check identity and months. Names, SSNs, coverage months, monthly premiums, SLCSP amounts, and APTC columns must match reality. Errors: call the Marketplace; do not invent fixes on 8962.
- Complete Form 8962 using 1095-A figures. Attach 8962 to your Form 1040. You generally do not mail 1095-A itself to the IRS.
- Park the PDF on a case with your return draft. If income shifted mid-year (big client win or dry spell), expect the reconciliation to move your refund or balance due.
You may need to file a return to reconcile APTC even when you would otherwise skip filing. Confirm against current Form 8962 instructions for your tax year.
